Murata and REKA team up to support the emerging and growth of Traffic Data in Malaysia
In this ever-evolving technological age, businesses are now required to advertise on the physical space and track in digital in order to compete fast with others of the same caliber. As a way to help empower this technology to rise, Murata Electronics is now teaming up with a Malaysian R&D startup, REKA, to explore the potential engagement in the field of traffic data monitoring. REKA aims to provide real-time traffic information which will definitely benefit smart city initiatives as well as the digital advertising sector.

This system uses raw data from Murata’s sensors which assists REKA to analyze said data with High Accuracy in real-time to provide unique data analysis based on the traffic counter result. The collected raw data is classified by vehicle class, the number of vehicles, and emission of CO2 within the sensor’s area coverage.
A common fear when it comes to data tracking and sensors is the public’s privacy security. However, with this piece of technology, the public’s privacy security is no longer a concern because the sensor is built to protect an individual’s privacy since it will not detect any individuals in the vehicle as the sensor is only counting and detecting the vehicle’s speed as well as the data components surrounding the sensor. “I am very excited to bring this ground-breaking work to our local ecosystem as real-time data is the most important piece of information that agencies require today, especially for smart city initiatives which will help in developing areas based on the ultra-accurate detection and changing the landscape in the digital advertising sector” commented Amri Mohd Din, the COO of REKA.
This technology was deployed in Cyberjaya and the data collected was digested for the Sepang Municipal Council and was converted into useful information that can potentially help planners and agencies to make more informed decisions. Additionally, local authorities are also able to utilize this data during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic to determine the necessary measures to curb the spread of the virus by monitoring the traffic during the MCO period. According to the collected data, there has been a significant decrease of vehicles on the road during the MCO from 1,521,041 vehicles to 369,956 vehicles which imply that the safety measures put in place have successfully kept citizens staying indoors.
“This collaboration between Murata and REKA is extremely important, especially in Malaysia with all the smart city initiatives that have been brought to the table while also monitoring the effectiveness of the safety measures set in place by the government to decrease the numbers of COVID-19 cases. REKA is excited to be an active link that prioritizes emerging initiatives and ideas in direct contact with the data collected which can have a tangible impact on the economy in general” added Amri to conclude the project.
