REKA began teaching in 2014, with hands-on training in the tools it was learning itself. In 2017 it ran IoT workshops and a hackathon with Telekom Malaysia’s TM:RE, and in 2020 it gave intubation boxes to Malaysian hospitals with MERCY Malaysia. Today interns and apprentices learn by building alongside the team.

    Hands-on training

When the studio turned to technology in 2014, the team ran a lot of hands-on training in web development, Raspberry Pi and Arduino, the Internet of Things and mobile apps. Teaching others meant mastering each tool first.

    #StartIoT workshops with TM:RE

REKA launched #StartIoT with TM:RE, Telekom Malaysia’s accelerator programme: three months of Internet of Things workshops for engineering students, local entrepreneurs and SMEs who wanted to learn about IoT and get started with it. The aim was to inspire local businesses and to raise students’ interest in STEM education in Malaysia.

“Through these workshops, we can see potential future designers from all over Malaysia creating new innovations and technology.”Haziq Faris, Co-founder of REKA, 2017 (translated from Malay)

    Intubation boxes for local hospitals

While the Movement Control Order was at its tightest, REKA partnered with MERCY Malaysia to give several local hospitals intubation boxes, to lower the risk of infection for frontline healthcare workers. The boxes were adapted from an open-source design by Taiwan-based Dr Hsien Yung Lai, to shield staff from droplets during intubation.

“The pandemic urges us to come up with an immediate solution to play our role in helping Malaysian frontliners. Our collaboration with MERCY eases the process to deliver the intubation boxes to the hospitals that are in need.”Haziq Faris, Co-founder of REKA, 2020
